CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS

Below, you will find Character Breakdowns for many of the characters in the show. This is a reasult of our directors meeting to discuss what they are looking for at auditions. These are not hard lines and demands, but guidelines to help those of you who may not be familiar with the show. Please note that while the original movie is great to use as reference, we are looking to the original Broadway production as inspiration. (this is especially true for the character of Annie and anhy of the orphans.)
Please feel free to reach out to Mr. Long, Mr. Murphy, Ms. Custino, or Ms. Murphy if you have any questions.
Annie –  a spunky, street-wise, authentic, hopeful, optimistic 11 year old ( presenting) with charisma for days and the keen ability to win over people of every social background. She is wise beyond her years and clever Must sing, dance, and act (solo singing voice with a young authentic sounding belt)
(side-note): Annie must be ok with handling dogs.
Warbucks – The highly educated billionaire with a “stuffy” persona and a soft heart underneath. He’s a very “matter of fact” man in his late 30’s who is shocked to have his heart won over by both Annie (and Grace in the end). A bit socially awkward, has a commanding presence with a bark far louder than his bite. Must act, sing and dance
Grace Farrell – The well ta-do, smart, witty secretary to Warbucks. She’s proper and loyal. Her name is no mistake- she’s filled with it. Kind and maternal. (think Mary Poppins without an accent)  She is roughly 28 years of age. Must sing, dance and Act
Miss Hannigan – The head of the Orphanage with not a single maternal bone in her body. She hates children and is only interested in making money. She feels the best years of her life are behind her at around age 40. A bit fickle with floozy like tendencies ( a bit of a romantic at heart), She’s selfish, conniving and out to make a buck. Most importantly she has fantastic comedic timing. She’s the likable villain we love to hate  Must sing, dance and act
Rooster – Hannigan’s little brother -a gangster type who gives into gambling, drinking and likes the ladies. He’s a smooth talker and will do what it takes to earn a buck ( lie, cheat, steal). Likes trouble and disguises. Must sing, dance and act
Lily – Rooster’s dim- witted girl friend. Dresses Gaudy, is heavily made up and has a loud mouth with a high pitched voice (think Galinda with a new york accent) Lower class born but uses her looks  to get the money and to be taken care of.  Must sing, dance and act.
Bert Healy – 1930’s radio show host with a Bawdy personality. Likable, performing “jack of all trades”  Must sing and act
Roosevelt – Literally the 32nd President of the United States given the task of helping America get back on its feet after the stock market crash. Wheel chair bound due to polio as a child. The only President in history to serve more than two terms. Known for his famous “New Deal”. Projects optimism and strength ( act and sing)
SERVANTS- featured in “Like it Here” “Won’t be an Orphan for Long”, “Annie” and “New Deal.”
All servants listed here as well as a few others to be cast all sing, act, and dance.
Drake – Prim, propper, comedic – Serious with a silly undertone. British accent encouraged. Sing, dance, act
Mrs. Pugh – The head chef at the Mansion, runs the kitchen – seen often with Drake with pencil and pad in hand prepared to take orders and ensure they are followed through seamlessly
Mrs. Greer – Supervisor to all the staff at Warbuck’s mansion, runs a tight ship, is “buttoned up” prim, no- nonsense and proper with a soft side underneath.  British accent is a plus. Sing, dance, act
Annette – The “french maid” at Warbuck’s mansion. She does the linens, makes the beds and is sweet natured
The Main ORPHANS- all sing “Hard Knock Life”, “Never Fully Dressed”, and “Getting a New Deal”
all dance and act as well as sing and have various solo spoken and singing lines/parts
Molly – the youngest orphan (5- 6 years old year old presenting) honest, lovable – adores Annie
Kate – Quiet but a trickster around (7 years old year old presenting)
Tessie – The worrier of the group – often called a cry baby – (10 years old year old presenting)
Pepper – The roughest orphan, fiery and a bully – has been at the orphanage the longest (12-13 year old presenting)
July – Quiet, mothering and nurturing (12-13 year old presenting)
Duffy – the oldest and tallest orphan (13-14 year old presenting) ,confident and Pepper’s side-kick
(all of the orphans have a feisty side and are at varying degrees of hopefulness in their life journey)
ENSEMBLE/CHORUS
Boylan Sisters – similar to the Andrew Sisters of the 1940’s but a decade sooner.Glamour galore- think constantly fixing their hair or filing their nails but a bit jaded by show business. These sisters are paid to sell ads with their iconic singing voices (harmony holding a must!) and move like one person (instead of 3)
Cabinet Members – proper business like (3 men and 1 woman) driven to “get the job done”, solve economic problems and a bit “stiff”or serious. Hesitant to “have fun” but are able to let loose when put to task. Act and sing (harmony holding a plus!)
Hooverilles- The homeless shanty town citizens who are dirt poor, down on their luck, humorous, sarcastic, and  honest- ‘tell it like it is”  kinda folks who look out  for each other (sing, act, dance)
New Yorkers– Various shoppers, sight seeers’, busy with hustle and bustle in the crowded streets (sing, move, act)
Star-to-be– A newly arriving young starlet who has traveled on her own to become a star. Optimistic and confident Solo vocalist in NYC  (must have a strong chest belt)
